The 28-year-old Russian Nikolay Davydenko claimed the biggest title of his career after he beat Juan Martin del Potro 6-3 6-4 in London on Sunday. This victory earned his 1300 points and let him jump fro the sixth to the seventh position in the world rankings.
Right after the ATP World Tour final match Davydenko talked to Sport Express correspondent.
"I expected that this game would be very difficult for me", admitted Nikolay. "I played two very tough three-set matches during recent two days and Saturday clash against Roger Federer was especially exhausting".
"I felt very tired at pre-match training and I even didn’t know which tennis I would be bale to demonstrate. But I made myself forger about all problems and came to the court 100% concentrated on the coming game. It seems to me that I played very well".
"To be honest I was not sure in my victory until the end of the match, even at double match-point. I was very nervous at the last game, because I felt that the biggest victory in my career was so close and it would have been silly to lose it".
"No doubt this year is the best one in my career. I had to miss several important competitions due to injury at the beginning of this year, but the second part of the season was more than perfect, and my today victory is something very special".
"Victory over Roger Federer is also very important achievement, because I lost 12 matches to him before that".
"However nothing could be compared to feelings of victory in this prestigious tournament, which is often called unofficial World championship".
"I managed to defeat all Grand Slam winners of this year during past several days and that is why I feel as a king now".
"I really hope that I will become more famous and popular in Russia. But at he same time I understand that Evgeniy Kafelnikov and Dinara Safina won two Grand Slam titles, while I have enough room for improvement".
"My main goal is to play tennis on a highest level. Of course I dream about achieving the same results like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, however I don’t like great attention paid by everyone to them. I would better prefer to become great champion and stay unnoticeable".
