RUBIN HOLDS BARCELONA TO SCORELESS DRAW

Rubin Kazan kept its hopes alive of winning a spot in the next stage of the Champions League as they played Barcelona on a scoreless draw.

Rubin - Barcelona 0-0

In conjunction with Internazionale's shock comeback victory over Dynamo Kyiv, Rubin find themselves third in the group two points behind the Serie A champions.

Barcelona narrowly missed taking the lead less than three minutes in when Zlatan Ibrahimović was played in but the striker rattled his effort off the right post. For the majority of the opening half the run of play was typified with Barcelona controlling the ball but being unable to break down Rubin's staunch defenders.

After a Gökdeniz Karadeniz effort late in the half was denied, Andrés Iniesta was played-in on the right by Zlatan Ibrahimović via a short free-kick but Rubin 'keeper Sergey Ryzhikov stopped him from point-blank range.

After the break the match slowly began to turn in Rubin's favour with Barcelona no longer able to dictate the flow of the match. With under a quarter-hour remaining Alejandro Domínguez provided Alexandr Bukharov with a perfect chance for the winning strike but the Russian international could not get his drive off and as Barcelona 'keeper Víctor Valdés challenged, the ball was cleared to safety by Carles Puyol.

Still Barcelona had one more chance and as added-time ticked down Lionel Messi dispatched the ball to Thierry Henry on the left channel but his effort steered far off course. Without further incident the match concluded as a scoreless draw, honours even.
