BYKOV UNVEILS KARJALA CUP ROSTER

The head coach of the Russian ice hockey national team commented on the extended squad for the Euro Hockey Tour Karjala Cup in Finland.

The extended roster consists of 28 players:

goalies – Alexandr Eremenko (Salavat Yulaev), Vasiliy Koshechkin (Lada), Georgiy Gelashvili (Lokomotiv);

defenders – Vitaliy Proshkin, Oleg Tverdovsky, Dmitriy Kalinin (all – Salavat Yulaev), Konstantin Korneev, Denis Kulyash (both – CSKA), Vitaliy Vishnevsky, Alexandr Guskov (both – Lokomotiv), Ilya Nikulin (Ak Bars), Vitaliy Atyushov (Metallurg Magnitogorsk), Sergey Zubov (SKA);

forwards – Sergey Zinoviev, Alexandr Radulov, Alexandr Perezhogin, Viktor Kozlov (all – Salavat Yulaev), Danis Zaripov, Alexey Tereschenko, Alexey Morozov (all – Ak Bars), Maxim Sushinsky, Konstantin Gorovikov (both – SKA), Oleg Saprykin (Dynamo Moscow), Sergey Mozyakin (Atlant), Anton Kuryanov (Avangard), Alexandr Galimov (Lokomotiv), Petr Schastlivy (CSKA), Kirill Knyazev (Spartak).

"The coaching staff of the national team regards the Finish tournament of the Euro Hockey Tour as one of the most important stages this season," said Bykov.

"There is an important nuance – the games at the Karjala Cup will be held on smaller rinks and that means with higher density and intensity of the game. In principle these games will serve as rehearsal before the Olympics."

"Actually the current squad can serve as a prototype of the KHL part of the Vancouver team. Though there are several players who did not get a call up but are among candidates for the Olympics."

"The most striking newcomer this time is Sergey Zubov but you know our concept – we never peer at the players’ passport…"

"Sergey started the KHL season well together with his team, after more than a decade in NHL he adapted easily to the European ground. Zubov proved that he is efficient as attack creator. His invitation to the national team should not surprise anyone."

"Other newcomers are Galimov and Knyazev. We have watched the Lokomotiv forward for longer than a year but we failed to test him in action before."

"What concerns Knyazev he is a finding of this season, one of the top scorers of such an interesting and attacking team as Spartak."

"By the 1 November our country is to hand in to IIHF the extended roster for the Vancouver Games consisting of 51 players."

"I think this list will be announced on 1 November, not earlier, for we want to use all the time given to accumulate maximum information."
