In 2003 Stombergas told the head coach of Unics of that time Antanas Sireika that he got tired of basketball and wanted to quit.
And imagine the astonishment of the Kazan and not only Kazan supporters when they learnt that the European champion-2003 returns to the team.
"When I returned to Lithuania two years ago I kept on receiving offers from other teams," said Stombergas.
"So I never sat on one place – moved, ran. I could not but play… and moreover I never disrupted connections with Unics, we kept in touch with each other."
"They never hid it in Kazan that they wanted to see me back in the team and because the desire to play have not died in me this spring we agreed at last that I was to return to the team."
"Moreover I know the new head coach Valdemaras Chomicius very long and very well. This thing became the decisive factor."
"So I played for these two years… for myself only. I played in different low Leagues in Lithuania. Where can I hide from basketball especially in my own native land? This game is in my blood."
"I am 35 now but I cannot say how long I will play. Time will show. Everything will depend on the strength of my desire to play. I hope there won’t be any injures…"
"For these two years I have traced Unics’s results in the Russian Superleague and European Cups."
"I even did not ask my agent to find any variants. I wanted to play exactly in Kazan where I spent three seasons."
"If I had not been able to return to Unics I would not have gone to any other club."
