A native of Moscow, Domani jumped to the United States from Russia which was somewhat out of the ordinary for USSR times. Dmitri Domani played college basketball at St.Joseph's University from 1993 to 1997 where he was a major impact player for the Hawks. He was a key member of the 1997 Atlantic-10 Conference Championship team, as the fourth leading scorer, averaging 8.4 points per game.

For the 1997-98 season Domani returned to Russia where he was signed by CSKA Moscow with which he won the 1997-98, 1998-99 and 1999-00 Russian National Championship and the 2000 Northern Europe Basketball League Championship. After five seasons at CSKA, Domani made a move to cross-town rivals MBC Dynamo Moscow, for which he is currently playing. He led Dinamo as their captain to the forefront of Russian basketball after a brief hiatus caused by financial problems. In 2006 Domani helped his team win ULEB Cup and thus secure a berth in Euroleague 2006/07 where they produced a sensation by making the quarterfinals.

Domani played at the 1994 and 1996 European Under-22 Championship. In 1998 Domani took part in the 1998 Goodwill Games. He was capped for the Russian national side at the 1995 and 2003 European Championship and the 1994 and 1998 World Championship.
