The former Russian centre forward and at present the Russian national side head coach Vyacheslav Bykov was born in 1960 in Chelyabinsk. Bykov started out playing for the team in his home city, Traktor.
On playing for three years in Chelyabinsk, the forward moved to CSKA Moscow. A small, technically gifted center, he was a regular fixture on the Soviet national ice hockey team in the 1980s and after the collapse of the Soviet Union he played for the Russian national side in the 1990s. He was drafted by the Quebec Nordiques in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft in the 9th round at number 169 overall although he would never play in the NHL. In 1990 he went to play for Fribourg-Gottéron in the Swiss Nationalliga A. Bykov’s number 90 jersey was retired by HC Fribourg-Gotteron. Bykov ended his illustreous playing career in 2000 having played the last two seasons with HC Lausanne in the Nationalliga B.

In 2004 Vyacheslav Bykov was elected to the Russian Ice Hockey Hall of Fame.

On August 10, 2006, Bykov was named as the new head coach of the Russian national ice hockey team taking over from Vladimir Krikunov.
