CSKA DEFEATS ROSENBORG IN COPA DEL SOL

CSKA Moscow followed up its opening match victory in the Copa del Sol tournament over Elfsborg with a confident 4-1 defeat of Norwegian champions Rosenborg on Saturday in Marbella, Spain. Using the tournament as a tune-up for their Champions League tie set to begin on 24 February against La Liga’s Sevilla at Luzhniki Stadium, the Army-Men have shone in early play, led not surprisingly by Serbian international Miloš Krasić.

The Norwegian champions, who feature the legendary Roar Strand, drew first blood at the third minute as Morten Moldskred surged diagonally off the left flank before firing a dipping drive from outside the area that seemed to catch CSKA goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev off guard. After relinquishing the opening goal Leonid Slutsky's men dominated the proceedings and at the tenth minute squared the match as new arrival Keisuke Honda deftly controlled a long ball before firing it off the left post, with Tomáš Necid driving the rebound in from ten metres. Three minutes later Miloš Krasić showed why he is reputedly a priority-signing target of many of Europe’s top clubs as in a vintage move he surged into right side of the area before beating the keeper with a perfectly placed effort. Showing their attacking venom, CSKA continued to press forward and at the eighteenth minute they doubled their as Tomáš Necid nodded in a long free kick from the left at the near post.

Adjusting his line up at the break, Leonid Slutsky summoned Evgeniy Aldonin, Vasiliy Berezutsky and Guilherme into the match with CSKA showing no signs of slowing. At the fifty-first minute, the Army-Men took at 4-1 lead as Pavel Mamaev, slipped off his mark at the near post to head Georgiy Schennikov’s slide rule cross from the left flank into the back of the net. In the final half-hour, Leonid Slutsky called up the highly promising eighteen year-old attacker Anton Zabolotny, Elvir Rahimić and Chidi Odiah and whilst CSKA continued to show well they were unable to build on their lead and had to be satisfied with the 4-1 win.

The Army-Men return to play in the Copa del Sol against Denmark’s Odense BK on Tuesday evening.
