The highly respected Dutch manager took the helm of Russia in April of 2006 and lead them to stunning semi-final finish in the Euro 2008. In a unique move this past February he split duties with Chelsea, managing the English Premier League side following the sacking of Luiz Felipe Scolari. His short four month tenure in London concluded with a FA Cup triumph over Everton resulting in many suggesting Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich to secure his services on a full-time basis.
Mr. Hiddink, whose contract with the Russian Football Union runs through the World Cup in July 2010, has returned to his native Holland to consider future plans. While reports are speculative in nature, with little to play for till the serious qualifying for the Euro 2012 begins, many suspect he will look to re-enter the day to day club coaching world. The obvious question to be answered is whether he will accept the RFU's contract extension offer and begin a much-needed revamping of youth development programs across the country or make a move outside of Russia. Whether the loss to Slovenia results in the premature end to his career in Russia remains to be seen and at this writing Mr. Hiddink is providing few clues.
