The first match of semifinals took place in Omsk where Avangard hosted Metallurg Magnitogorsk. Metallurg soon took a comfortable lead 2:0 and then did not let the opponents fight back. As a result, Metallurg stole an away-victory from Avangard, 3:1.
The other match of semifinals between the title holders Ak Bars Kazan and playoffs-surprise CSKA Moscow was a hard-fought affair, despite the blasting score 5:2. Ak Bars Kazan came out eager to prove who is the favourite and were two goals ahead after the first period. The hosts shattered the intrigue in the second period, scoring three more.
